"I've always lived in pretty safe neighborhoods. I never had to worry about the violence that gets talked about," Wortendyke said. Then one day, she learned that a man killed his wife and children not far from her own East Village home. She found herself walking the street to see where it occurred, but never could figure out the location. "It was such a big thing that disappeared," Wortendyke said. That incident planted the seed that made her want to illustrate the homicide rate in the city in a way that brought meaning to numbers. "I didn't come to the project as an activist. I came to it as an artist," said Wortendyke, who is an adjunct professor of photography at Columbia College and Northeastern Illinois University. Wortendyke returned to each crime scene,

In a couple of instances, she said, she did feel scared, such as a time people nearby started yelling at her for taking pictures. She typically went in the early morning, when the area would be quiet, because she wanted photos that did not have people in them. A person in a photo could drive a story, she explained. "I wanted (the pictures) to be quiet memorials," Wortendyke said. In addition to the photographic piece, Wortendyke has a website,

I hope that in my doing this and my presenting it this way, people will see it," Wortendyke said. She hopes the work prompts people to talk about or think about violence in the city and culture as a whole. Wortendyke's piece was selected by the college's review committee of students, faculty,
